How to Free Up Phone Storage on Android and iPhone

A phone that says "storage full" usually has a few big culprits. Here is how to find them and clear space without losing anything you need.

A phone that says "storage full" usually has three or four big culprits, not a hundred small ones. Find those first and you can free several gigabytes in ten minutes, without deleting anything you care about.

Menu names differ a little between phone brands and software versions, so look for the closest match.

Quick answer

  1. Open the storage screen and see what is biggest.
  2. Back up photos and videos, then delete the local copies.
  3. Clear media that chat apps saved.
  4. Remove apps you do not use and clear app caches.
  5. Delete old downloads and offline files.

Step 1: See what is using the space

  • Android: Settings > Storage (on some phones Settings > Battery and device care > Storage).
  • iPhone: Settings > General > iPhone Storage. Wait a few seconds for the list to load.

The list shows photos, apps, system data and more, biggest first. Start at the top.

Step 2: Photos and videos

Videos are usually the largest files on a phone. Back them up first (Google Photos, iCloud, or copy them to a computer). Open the backed-up copy and check it plays. Only then delete the copy on the phone.

On iPhone, Photos > Albums > Recently Deleted keeps removed photos for 30 days, so empty it to get the space back. On Android, check the Trash or Bin in your gallery app.

Step 3: Media saved by chat apps

WhatsApp, Telegram and Messenger save every photo, voice note and video you receive. In WhatsApp open Settings > Storage and data > Manage storage. It lists chats by size and lets you delete large files while keeping the messages.

Step 4: Apps and caches

  • Sort apps by size and remove the ones you have not opened for months. You can install them again later.
  • Android: Settings > Apps > pick an app > Storage > Clear cache. Do not press Clear data unless you want to sign in again and lose its saved files.
  • iPhone: Settings > General > iPhone Storage > pick an app > Offload App. This frees the app but keeps its data.

Step 5: Downloads and offline files

Check the Downloads folder, offline maps, offline music and video streaming downloads. Delete what you already watched or no longer need.

Common mistakes

  • Deleting photos before checking the backup finished.
  • Pressing Clear data instead of Clear cache.
  • Using "cleaner" apps. They show ads and often free less than the steps above.
  • Leaving 90 percent full. Phones slow down and updates fail when they are almost full, so aim to keep a few gigabytes free.

Bottom line

Check the storage screen, back up and remove the biggest videos, trim chat media, and offload unused apps. These four steps solve most "storage full" problems without a new phone or a memory card.
